Forgotten Food Factors
Our civilization has made great strides in the conquest of infectious diseases, so great, in fact, that they now account for only approximately four percent of deaths in the United States. It is quite reasonable, under these conditions, that we should undertake to teach primitive peoples over the earth how to avoid or cope with infections. In contrast to this, however, is our attempt to convert them to other facets of our civilization. Over eight percent of our deaths are caused by metabolic diseases with were completely unknown among many primitive populations until the coming of the emissaries of civilization. They had no heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, or schizophrenia until we taught them how to acquire these diseases through our dietary regimens. Many of their populations have been reduced to a small fraction of their previous numbers either by our arrogant insistence upon the superiority of our way of life or by the seductions of our confections. It is small wonder that primitive peoples in many parts of the world are in turmoil and that at least some of them wish to return to their ancestral practices and blot out the traces of contact with civilization.
