The Tarahumara Long-Distance Runners
Hour after hour, mile after mile - they can run 100 miles without stopping or even 200 miles in kickball races day and night. Who are they? They are the Tarahumara Indians, 70,000 of them, living in the Copper Canyon region of northwest Mexico. Medical and nutrition journals have highlighted their remarkable endurance and how they ate. My visit in April 1998 provided me with ample data. I returned feeling that the Tarahumaras have something to teach us. We can translate the Tarahumara foods into American foods. Their corn-bean-squash, animal foods, fruits and vegetables, especially greens, with practically no sugar or processed foods should teach us to follow their lead
