Supermarket Suicide: Stay Sane and Save the Planet When You Shop

A trip down the fruit and vegetable aisles of most supermarkets is the same wherever you go - identical varieties of apples, carrots, potatoes and other fresh produce available all year around. In the United Kingdom, most supermarkets rarely have more than two sorts of organic apples in stock.[2] More than 80% of the organic apples sold in Britain are imported.[3] When you consider that there are more than 250 varieties of apples grown in the U.K.[4], it prompts the question: “Why are we importing when we can grow enough of our own?” With non-organic produce, the situation is only slightly better. Only 38 % of apples sold in the U.K. supermarkets are home-grown (grown in the U.K.).
