In the News, Summer 2023: Low-Carb Breakfast May Help Control Type 2 Diabetes
Modifying just one meal of the day – breakfast – may help people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) better control their blood sugar, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The change involves switching from a standard low-fat breakfast, consisting of foods such as oatmeal, toast, and fruit, to a low-carb meal made up of foods higher in protein and fat, such as eggs with cheese or bacon.
In the 12-week study, 121 participants were randomly assigned to either a low-carb group or a low-fat control group. The low-carb group ate breakfasts with about 8 grams of carbs, 25 grams of protein, and 37 grams of fat. The control group ate breakfasts with about 56 grams of carbs, 20 grams of protein, and 15 grams of fat. Participants wore continuous glucose monitoring devices throughout the study and took A1C tests to measure their average blood sugar levels at its beginning and end.
The low-carb group experienced a reduction in blood sugar levels and had lower glycemic variability than the controls. Lead author Barbara Oliveira observed: “One of many complications for people living with T2D is rapid or large increases in blood glucose levels after a meal. Our research indicates a low-carbohydrate meal, first thing in the morning, seems to help control blood sugar throughout the day.”
