In the News, Spring 2010: Breast Milk: Nature’s Answer to Saving Lives and Billions of Dollars
According to a new study published in the Journal Pediatrics, breastfeeding for the first six months of life results in billions of dollars in savings in health care costs and close to 1,000 preventable infant deaths every year. The causes of death in 95% of cases are attributed to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), lower respiratory infections such as pneumonia, and necrotizing enterocolitis (in which the intestinal wall lining dies). Breast milk contains antibodies that protect infants from bacterial and viral infections, and provides a source of complete nourishment that helps optimal growth, development, and health.
