Gosaba is an island in Bengal, India. In the early 20th century, Scotsman Sir Daniel Hamilton transformed the unsettled island into what became a unique community of 22,000 people. This is the story of how he did it, along with a description of the economic, agricultural, educational, and judicial systems of Gosaba. "The happiness of the people at Gosaba is, now, an example of how successful Government of the people, for the people, by the people must be, if and when it is given a real chance."
