From the Executive Director – Summer 2020
Dear Members and Friends,
In the 1930s, Weston A. Price, DDS, developed a unique worldview of the significance of an ancestral diet and the consequences of its abandonment. He was an intrepid explorer with a keen scientific eye, and yet the nutritional wisdom that he uncovered as the key to robust health has been followed by relatively few.
I join the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation at a time when the world confronts a persistent health crisis that knows no borders and is disproportionately taking lives in marginalized communities, including many of those where Dr. Price found robust health less than 100 years ago. This threat is the result of our own negligence – our modern diet fueled by detrimental government standards, overuse of pesticides and other environmental toxins, and an unhealthy focus on corporate profit is making us vulnerable to a virus afflicting millions. With your help, we can advance Price-Pottenger’s mission to improve lives through nutrition by informing, educating, and empowering the public to make decisions that will advance their health amidst this pandemic.
“If you have your health, you have everything!” These words repeated by my parents since my childhood resonate in my life and influence my wellness practices. You can imagine the importance they placed on health, considering that as children during WWII they endured starvation, illness, and persecution. While that’s a story for another time, it should come as no surprise that they made sure food was plentiful during my childhood. What they didn’t know was that, as with every young family in America, our modern diet was weakening us.
Embracing ancestral nutrition wisdom, leveraging contemporary science, and legitimizing holistic health practices, along with fostering access to real food raised in harmony with nature, inspire my purpose as the Executive Director of Price-Pottenger. I pivoted from a career in the for-profit media industry into the nonprofit sector, joining the National Aquarium in Washington, DC, and Baltimore, MD, in 2011. My work propelled National into the environmental conservation spotlight and raised its reputation to the number-two aquarium in the United States. I returned home to San Diego in 2014 to lead Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and, after an interim directorship, launched a strategic planning and marketing consultancy. Today, I am excited more than ever to combine my passion for health as well as my professional expertise to advance the mission and impact of Price-Pottenger.
As we slowly recover from social distancing and isolation, I look forward to returning Price-Pottenger to its active role as a convener of people and ideas to advance our individual journeys to vibrant health. Until then, we’re busy making changes to our website so that you can more easily discover and access original writings of Dr. Price, Dr. Francis M. Pottenger, Jr., and 16 other health pioneers of the 20th century. This rich online source of information also includes well over 1,000 health and wellness articles, recipes, book reviews, and nutrition news reports.
Your membership is invaluable to us at Price-Pottenger. We’re also very grateful for the additional contributions you’ve made over the years, and especially for donations during this pandemic, to support our work to improve lives. Please follow us on social media, inspire your friends to start their journey to wellness, and come to see us soon when our in-person classes start up again.
With thanks,
Steven Schindler
