Hard Ketones: A Healthy Alternative to Standard Alcoholic Beverages
THE ULTIMATE, HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE TO ALCOHOL THAT STILL GIVES YOU A PLEASANT BUZZ: HARD KETONES!
By Nora Gedgaudas
SO… In the spirit of holiday and New Year’s Eve celebrations, I would like to make mention of a unique form of alcohol that is actually good for you… And yes, that also gets you buzzed.
My friend, Frank Llosa at KetoneAid–which makes the best quality true ketone esters for better cognitive functioning and sports performance anywhere – – has also brilliantly developed what he calls “Hard Ketones.”
The way the story goes, as I understand it, is this: During the search in the lab for a quality, effective ketone ester for enhanced performance one of the ketone precursor compounds studied was something called R 1,3 Butanediol. During initial studies, they observed the mice they fed this to sort of stumbling around. OOPS! Researchers quickly realized that as a ketone alcohol it was causing the mice to act drunk. At the time, they were looking things that boosted athletic and cognitive performance and energy, so they moved on to other things… But Frank was inspired to take this intriguing substance in a different direction.
It turns out that when humans ingest R 1,3 Butanediol it causes a mild, pleasant form of alcohol-like intoxication. But unlike every other form of alcohol consumed at your local bar, which are 100% ethanol-based, it does not create liver damaging, free radical generating, nutrient depleting acetaldehyde effects, anxiety, agitation or hangovers, but is instead simply converted harmlessly to ketones as its byproduct by your liver. And there is zero carb content…so no blood sugar complications. Healthy ketosis is also known to help naturally enhance GABA levels. In other words, it generates both anti-inflammatory effects and beneficial compounds associated with the many benefits of ketosis (or fasting) and no harmful ones typically derived from drinking wine, beer or distilled spirits. Also, unlike what commonly occurs with ethanol-based beverages, your consumption of these Hard Ketones tends to be fairly self limiting. In other words, you aren’t tempted to keep drinking past one or two. The recommended limit is three. It’s not that you stop liking it; it’s just that you feel just the right amount of happy and feel no real need to keep drinking them.
It’s a form of alcohol that is LITERALLY GOOD FOR YOU.
My personal experience with it is that the effects are decidedly relaxing, a little “buzzy” in a nice, happy way, sleep improving (without adversely messing with your blood sugar or REM sleep), and unless you are foolish enough to get behind the wheel of a car (NOT recommended), your buzz is entirely consequence-free. (—Assuming, that is, that you aren’t prone to saying and acting out stupid things when mildly impaired.)
Many who enjoy these regularly find that their taste or cravings for conventional alcohol tends to kind of wane and/or go away with regular Hard Ketone use. The taste is perfectly decent. There seems to be no major downside. In fact, the only 2 minor downsides I can think of is the fact that they don’t give this stuff away, and as of right now there are only limited flavor choices: there is a piña colada version (slightly lower in keto alcohol content, but effervescently pleasant on the palate, especially over ice), a Ginger Mule version (about twice the strength), and a realistic Gin & Tonic version that is best enjoyed over ice with a squeeze of lime. The G&T is also twice as potent as the more tropical flavored version.
