I consider it the greatest honor to be selected as Executive Director of Price-Pottenger.
I’ve worked in the nutrition and alternative medicine fields for the past decade sharing my expertise in applied technology solutions as well as strategy and digital marketing with numerous clients.
I have always been inspired by PPNF’s mission and values over the years as our work intersected. Price-Pottenger is held in the highest esteem by every single client I’ve worked with and the Journal has been on my coffee table for as long as I can remember. I am a believer. I am a fan.
My journey to optimal health over the last 20 years has taken me down a variety of paths but following a Traditional Diet, supporting local ’farm to table’ businesses, and buying organic have been integral. I’ve also been blessed with an amazing wife who is a writer in this industry and she keeps me walking my talk.
Working side by side with the Board here at PPNF and drawing inspiration from teachers I admire, like our own David Getoff, is a real pleasure. They set the bar high for their own personal health and want to help others do the same.

As the keeper of the original research of Weston A. Price, DDS, Francis M. Pottenger Jr., MD, and other nutrition pioneers of our time, Price-Pottenger lights the way for teaching the wisdom of the past and applying it to today, for the health and well-being of generations to come.
Ed Bennett holds a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautics, but his early interest in food preparation and organic gardening led him into the natural foods business shortly after graduating. His education in that field began by working with local organic farmers, who inspired him with their passion for growing produce and raising animals using Nature’s principles. He was instrumental in creating the first natural foods store in Hawaii to produce sprouted and whole-grain bakery products, and has held management positions in several retail health food stores.
He was introduced to Price-Pottenger by Pat Connolly, who was at that time Executive Director of the Foundation, and with her guidance soon found that by following the principles of Dr. Weston A. Price and Dr. Francis M. Pottenger, Jr., he noticed life-changing improvements in his own health. He was invited to become a member of Price-Pottenger’s Advisory Board and was later voted to the office of Board President. He is especially committed to teaching Price-Pottenger’s principles to young people and prospective parents, so that they and future generations can benefit from this vital information.
Ed has appeared on radio and television interviews for Price-Pottenger and is active in environmental issues, particularly with the campaign to remove fluoride from public water supplies. He raises organically grown vegetables from square-foot gardens at his home and encourages others to grow as much of their own food as they can, and to support local organic farmers and food producers.
In addition to his duties as Price-Pottenger President and Curator, he is currently editor of the Price-Pottenger Journal of Health and Healing.
David Getoff is a Board Certified Traditional Naturopath, a Board Certified Clinical Nutritionist, a Fellow of the American Association of Integrative Medicine, an elected member of both the American College of Nutrition and the International College of Integrative Medicine, a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, and Vice President of the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation.
He is board certified in integrative medicine, and has developed and produced over a dozen educational holistic health DVDs on numerous topics including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and detoxification and is the co-author of Reduce Blood Pressure Naturally. His recorded video and audio presentations are available for purchase from Price-Pottenger.
David is licensed or certified in either traditional naturopathy or nutrition in three states and has a private practice in El Cajon, California. He has also developed the 9-week course entitled Attaining Optimal Health in the 21st Century, which he has been teaching for the past 15 years, and has been a presenter at numerous scientific medical, nutritional, dental, and organic agriculture conferences around the U.S. David is on the scientific advisory board of a number of top supplement manufacturers and is often asked for opinions as new products are being developed. Joann Berger is a Board Certified Clinical Nutritionist. She received her BS degree from Arizona State University and then studied two years with the American Academy of Nutrition, completing the Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN) post graduate study program. The CCN credential is the national standard for clinical nutritionists who meet high requirements of professional competency. Joann trained for many years with David Getoff, CCN, CTN, FAAIM, an influential and respected naturopath in the field of nutrition. She has a private practice in San Diego, CA.
Dr. Andrew J. Zakarian received his dental education at New York University – College of Dentistry and did research and advanced treatment work in the Department of Periodontology at Columbia University in New York City. In addition, Dr. Zakarian has a certificate in acupuncture and a Masters degree in Microbiology and Immunology. Dr. Zakarian has taught residency programs and has been practicing general dentistry since 1984 in Manhattan, New York and since 1999 in San Diego, California.
Mark has a bachelor’s degree in biology and has completed both undergraduate-and graduate-level coursework in nutrition. As Executive Editor, Mark was responsible for the new look and format of the Price-Pottenger Journal of Health and Healing. He is currently a consulting editor. Mark has also been instrumental in shaping the new direction of the foundation with an expanded mission to reach more people with our message. He is a nutrition and wellness coach and practices in San Diego, California.
Mary Ann Sowards, MA, has focused her interests upon the spiritual, psychological, and physical aspects of health and healing.
She has a master’s degree in Consciousness Studies. The mother of three children, her background in public relations and theatre, her promotion of the advantages of breastfeeding and good nutrition to young parents, and her on-going classes in t’ai chi and ESL have paralleled her 20+year involvement with Price-Pottenger. With her emphasis on research sources and outreach programs, she also acts as liaison with our sister affiliate in Japan, the Koushikai group.
Mary Ann is dedicated to growing Price-Pottenger as the primary, reliable resource for nutritional information and education–the foundation of robust and vibrant health.
Dr. Hirschenbein earned a PhD in clinical psychology at Boston University and an MD degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He was board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology and started a private practice in 1978. Following his introduction to integrative medicine in 1995, he became board certified in anti-aging medicine and holistic medicine. He is a CCN (certified clinical nutritionist), CNS (certified nutrition specialist), and DANLA (diplomat in advanced nutritional laboratory assessment). Dr. Hirschenbein has completed the AFMCP (Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice) program, DAN (Defeat Autism Now) training, and Lyme disease training through ILADS (International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society).
He has lectured nationally and internationally, hosted a local radio show, and given many TV interviews. Dr. Hirschenbein is the medical director of the La Jolla Institute of Comprehensive Medicine in California.
After serving on Price-Pottenger’s Board of Directors for over 18 years, Joan became the Executive Director in 2005. Upon retiring in February 2017, she again took a seat on the Board of Directors.
Joan was introduced to nutrition and alternative medicine in 1969 by her inspirational mother. She became an RN in 1974 and over the years received training and experience in other alternative medicine modalities. This gave her a respect and understanding for both Eastern and Western medicine, but her passion has always been nutrition. She firmly believes that properly nourishing the body is the key to enhancing the body-mind-spirit connection.
In addition to her medical background, she continues to bring to Price-Pottenger her experience in administration, business development, program development, community and professional education, marketing, and community relations.
