Dental Disease, Propaganda, and Food

Sometimes we wonder if there is a deliberate plan to keep the medical and dental professions ignorant of the latest knowledge in etiology and treatment, where some business interests are likely to be disturbed by the facts. The immediate cause of my comment is the perusal of the latest Merck Manual, a 1500 page reference work for the physician. This eighth edition, just out, contains this remarkable misstatement: “Systemic conditions play an insignificant role in caries formation…according to present knowledge no single agent is responsible…The saying ‘for every child a tooth’ no longer is tenable, apparently once the permanent teeth are fully formed they are little influenced by the nutritional state or the calcium demands of the body.” (Page 301)
What Monumental and Colossal Misinformation. Dr. Harold Hawkins in his book Applied Nutrition shows conclusively how caries cannot occur in a patient who has the proper blood ratio of calcium and phosphorus, which is an exact reflection of his food chemistry.1
Of all comments that have no foundation in fact, the one denying that formed teeth are immune to later influences is a prize example. Every physician has seen with his own eyes the rapid destruction of the sound and filled teeth of the pregnant and malnourished mother. How does it take place?? Simply by acid destruction, the hydrochloric acid of the regurgitated stomach contents in the nausea of pregnancy very soon destroys teeth, loosens fillings and renders sound teeth sensitive by reason of the porosity produced by the acid. The drinking of hydrochloric acid often prescribed for achlorhydric patients is just as destructive, unless carefully taken through a straw, as every doctor knows.
Getting more diffusible calcium into the saliva by the use of calcium lactate and vitamin F is just as practical in restoring damage to teeth that has not progressed too far, as well as in recalcifying chalky teeth in children. In a few weeks the chalky appearance is changed into the normal translucent hard form of enamel, if the proper biochemical conditions are created.
The hyperemesis of pregnancy is purely a reaction to starvation, the specific form of starvation that follows the use of foods that are “made worse so that they can be sold for less.” It promptly ceases in the vast majority of cases where a natural concentrate of multiple vitamins is used to supplement the white flour and refined sugar products that represent 60% of the average starvation diet in this strange country of sick and prosperous people who can buy automobiles enough to all go pleasure riding at the same time, but cannot afford to eat food that will protect their bodies from dissolution.
This state of mind being the result of cheapening the basic foods to where the maker of good products cannot make most people believe that it is necessary to pay twice as much for a food that is infinitely better–infinite being the term to use where one product inevitably brings death and disease, the other life and health.
The propagandists are even politically powerful enough to promote laws stopping the use of the term “health food”, as it creates the true impression that the “Health Food” is better in building health and life.
Bleached flour, refined sugar, synthetic glucose or counterfeit fats could not possibly be legitimately marketed as foods without corruption, dishonesty and compromise at the sources of law making and law enforcement.
To get the calcium-phosphorus balance restored to the normal ratio the hog feeder uses alfalfa meal with its alkaline ash and high potassium content in his feed to offset the acid ash and the high phosphorus of the grain or cereal part of the ration. (Potassium lowers the blood phosphorus, it leaves the body only as phosphate.) (Hawkins, p. 112) To fail to add the alfalfa may cut in half the rate of bone and tooth development, and stunt the animal with corresponding loss of profit to the hog feeder. So he is far more accurately informed as to the facts than the august authorities who concoct the information in the MERCK MANUAL!!
If anyone needed proof that better food will immunize us to dental caries, we can refer him to the practical experience of such men as Dr. Fred Miller of Altoona, Pa. who has put his dental patients on such diets as to create perfect tooth structures at will. He simply eliminated all processed and refined foods from the schedules.
The Merck Manual goes further to say that the use of fluorine added to the drinking water (1 part per million) “in the early years of tooth formation appears to be an effective weapon in preventing the future development of caries.” Here is another queer statement. Our best authorities say that such a procedure is still in the experimental stage. Further, what is fluorine but an attempt to treat a deficiency disease, a form of starvation, with a poisonous drug? Such ignorant practises are common to our propaganda-guided healing professions. I again recall the definition of a medical education by a top dentist who was once president of the American Dental Association: “The warping of unsuspecting immature minds into a meticulous system of commercial superstition.”
We are here dealing with a cult, a single-trackfetish that makes its converts fanatics who cannot see or appraise any other idea than the one they have been inoculated with. Of all the healing cults that have fastened their vicious tentacles upon the minds of men, the POISON CULT is the most horrible. It is positively malignant in its nature. Remedies for disease are defined “as of necessity POISONS” (see the accompanying reprint 25-a). To try to prevent a result of malnutrition by introducing poisons into drinking water is an exhibition of insanity, to our way of thinking. To say that fluorine compounds are found in foods is no argument. Arsenic is a trace mineral food element too, so is cobalt, so is barium, chromium, zinc and copper. But they must be present in nutritional forms, in organic combinations, forms that have already gone through cell life; otherwise they are deadly poisons. We as well as all animals must depend upon plant synthesis of foodstuffs for our existence. We tear apart the organic foods that they put together, return them to the earth in degraded forms for resynthesis into food, resynthesis by PLANT CELLS, often assisted by microbic subcontractors in the soil. The followers of this POISON CULT get incurably fixed in the obsession that the physical integrity of the human body has no relationship to the materials supplied it as food. They declare that cancer has no relation to nutrition, in fact, some insist that malnutrition has no relation to disease at all. (Sworn statement of Dr. Elmer Nelson of the Federal Food & Drug Administration!!!)
With such warped minds supplying the entire medical and dental professions with “authoritative” text books what hope is there for survival of the race? I have here a new text book on Human Biochemistry by Israel S. Kleiner; Ph. D. (Mosby) 1951. On Page 443 is a reiteration of the comment that there is no truth in “a tooth for every child.” And that tooth structure cannot be recalcified once it becomes porous. And on page 618 “saliva has no bactericidal power.” Certainly, normal saliva controls bacterial activity, as does the secretions of all tissue. We have here the age-old obsession that bacterial causes are responsible for disease, not malnutrition that weakens the body and lets in the bacteria.2 Lowered resistance from malnutrition MUST in time be accepted as the basic cause of disease instead of the accidental encountering of swarms of bacteria–although that cause is not to be under-rated once it is well established, like a forest fire that is a result of dry weather, once started will burn pretty damp trees. Lowered resistance of the entire population sets the stage for successful invasion by microbes, viruses, etc.
We have before us a very recent review of periodontal disease, published by a large drug house. They fail to list any nutritional cause, or even to discuss the possibility except to say “soft foods…favor calculus formation.”
Now gingivitis we can say is Vitamin P deficiency. Bleeding tendencies can usually be controlled in a day or two by the use of two tablets a day of the simple dehydrated juice of green buckwheat in tablet form.3 It seems to be just as specific as any good form of Vitamin C in scurvy. Ascorbic Acid, of course, has dismally failed to.have curative effects on the hemorrhagic aspects of either scurvy or gingivitis.
Most dentists agreethat with no gingivitis, no pyorrhea will develop. But an added factor aggravates the bone disease once it is established, that is the lack of the amino acids, enzymes and minerals found in Raw Bone. (Cooked bone is as useless to supply calcium as cooked or pasteurized milk. Remember that test animals lose their teeth very quickly on pasteurized milk by pyorrhea that ensues.) 4
Raw Bone in flour form is now available.5 It is just a stone age food, that affords the same protection to the integrity of bone and the tooth-supporting structure as a stone age diet of bone reduced to a pulp under a stone hammer.
As a very good insight into the mental processes of the makers of unfit foods, the fellows we think are responsible for the biased “scientific opinions” here exposed, we cite the words of one of their legal counsel in Food, Drug & Cosmetic Law Journal, Oct. 1951, page 781: “We must not confuse the preachments of (nutritional quacks and industry baiters) with expressions of honest differences of opinion among honest men with a common objective…a word of caution is in order. The propaganda which needs to be combatted cannot be successfully met by a campaign of outclaiming the fakers…prudence dictates that a skunk be dispatched rather than engaged in contest.” This from the flour millers’ legal front man. Remember those millers themselves said in answer to a bunch of questionnaires that flour bleaching was a “fraud, a cheat, an abomination, a deceit, a method to sell low grade flour as a product of the finest wheat”, that 99 in 100 millers were sorry that the process was ever invented?6 That is the “honest men” that would cooperate with “quacks”, to advance the interests of the milling industry if they were not “skunks,” to be dispatched. In order to prosecute competitors of these makers of “death foods”–the makers of “health foods”–the Government has stretched the Constitutional limitations far beyond the breaking point. We further quote from the same Journal: “Such legislation dispenses with the conventional requirement for criminal conduct–awareness of some wrongdoing. In the interests of the larger good, it puts the burden of acting at hazard upon a person otherwise innocent but standing in responsible relation to a public danger.” (Page 756) THIS REALLY MEANS THAT TO INSURE THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE PUBLIC, THE CONSTITUTIONAL PRINCIPLE THAT AN ACT CAN ONLY BE CRIMINAL WHEN THE OFFENDER IS AWARE OF THE HARM HE IS CAUSING must be suspended. At the same time the makers of bleached flour are going scott-free while KNOWING that they are criminals and admitting it. What a frightful perversion of law! Their competitors can be framed very easily with this constitutional protection removed. I can recall several cases, one where a conviction was obtained by the connivance of a Federal Judge who actually refused to permit the accused to know what his crime was until he got into court. Then after getting a conviction from a bamboozled jury, to block a successful appeal to a higher court the Federal prosecutor brazenly got away with claiming that the defendant’s chief witness said the OPPOSITE of what he really did in his argument to the appeal court, the transcript apparently having been tampered with to permit this stunt. The whole thing was so cleverly covered up that it was ten years before it was noticed. The Food & Drug Administration have publicly stated that they intend to put all “Health Food” sellers out of business. That would leave only “death foods” like bleached flour for us to eat.
These fellows have so manipulated the law (or somebody else with parallel objectives) that it is impossible for an honest man to get a fair shake in any food and drug litigation today. It is a serious offense, punishable by a ten thousand dollar fine, to claim that a synthetic food is inferior to a natural product, according to Federal Trade Commission orders. And no court has jurisdiction to review the justice of this edict. It is as despotic as any of Hitler’s pronouncements.
A fine specimen of propaganda by commercial fertilizer interests appeared in September Country Gentlemen. Dr. R. I. Throckmorton of Kansas State College hysterically attacked organic principles of farming. One statement he made was that “the belief that commercial fertilizers are poison is ridiculous.” Had he not read in the Journal of the A.M.A. (June 3, 1950, Page 476) about the 14 infants who died in Minnesota by getting in their milk formula a few parts per million of nitrate chemicals that leached into wells from field soils? with 130 more who were poisoned and ill enough to instigate an investigation and a correct diagnosis?
Ammonium Nitrate after leaching into a well can be fatal to a baby in dilutions of one part in a million. Such a poison should be well enough publicized as to be known to a Dean of a College of Agriculture like Dr. Throckmorton unless he is not a dean at all–just a figurehead and front man for the Poison Cult and their partners the chemical fertilizer interests. The Country Gentlemen needs, too, to look to their own gullibility in taking in such a piece of propaganda and offering it as honest information for their readers. Let us have the scientific facts–and let us expose the deliberate racketeers who have no conscience. If we treat them like gentlemen, they will continue to rob us behind our backs of our health and life. They will continue to poison not only our wells and foods but also our sources of information like The Country Gentlemen.
WHY HAS NO UNIVERSITY YET SET UP EXPERIMENTS TO ASCERTAIN WHAT MERIT IF ANY THE ORGANIC AGRICULTURE IDEA MIGHT HAVE? I will tell you. It is too hard to suppress the possible adverse findings on commonly used fertilizers, that would embarrass the chemical industry. Just as we have shown that no honest effort is being made to find what, if any, relation there may be between malnutrition and cancer, malnutrition and polio, etc. Millions of dollars are being spent upon frivolous and irrelevant, fundamentally unsound projects such as trying to find a poison cure for these diseases that are really forms of starvation.
SOMEBODY is sifting these projects and blue-penciling the only ones that would find a remedy, unless I am an imbecile. Of 63 projects listed in Public Health Report of June 1951 of the Federal Security Agency, for cancer research, each calling for up to a million dollars, NONE WERE FOR LOOKING INTO POSSIBLE CAUSES THAT RELATE TO MALNUTRITION. That state of affairs CANNOT be a coincidence. Neither can Dr. Throckmorton’s tirade in The Country Gentlemen. If so, I would say “about as much of a coincidence as for a bunch of monkeys jumping on typewriters to write the Encyclopedia Britannica.”
The comments in this issue are of special interest at the present time in view of the propaganda articles appearing this month (December, 1951) in the American Magazine and the Woman’s Home Companion. These articles tell us that the American people are the best fed in history and that we need not worry about deficiency, disease, even while 750,000 persons a year are dying from heart disease, which is due to refined devitalized and adulterated food products (mainly bleached flour that has been deliberately deprived of its oxidizable vitamins by the chemicals added to deceive the buyer into thinking that it is of a higher quality than it really is. Musty wheat makes a gray flour).
