The Biological and Political Consequences of Malnutrition

Royal Lee, DDS / February 3, 1955

Lecture to Natural Food Association, Longview, Texas, February 3, 1955.

* * *

Most of us in the present world of economic liberality and “easy money”, have lost the meticulous moral righteousness of our forefathers. They would never accept a gratuity that they did not earn, nor would they permit themselves to get involved in the slightest kind of misrepresentation. Today we think nothing of making and selling food substitutes and imitations that in the old days would be considered rank criminality. We bleach flour so that any grade of wheat can be used to make “Number One patent white flour”, where the bleach chemicals used are poisonous, and where important food factors are also converted into appallingly insidious poisons by such bleaches. (Note how fractions of the vitamin E complex are converted into alloxan, a poison that in minute doses causes diabetes).1 The bleach poisons destroy vitamins that are essential to health, specifically essential to the protection of the actual cell “blueprints”2 so that a scourge of creeping paralyses and nervous and muscular dystrophic diseases sweep the nation.3,4

We renovate our natural foods to remove factors that are perishable, little realizing that when we remove such components we are destroying the life-supporting organic vitamins and minerals, creating non-nutritional “foods” that, when fed to animals, insure their affliction with cancer, arthritis, heart disease, gastric ulcers, and liver and kidney disease.5,6

We concoct synthetic imitations of food components in our laboratories, proceed to sell them in tremendous quantities to an unsuspecting and trusting public, which is unaware of the fact that our original pure food laws have been destroyed by human termites hired to enforce the law.7

No one should have the privilege of using the entire population of the country as a guinea-pig test-colony on which to test unknown and potentially dangerous counterfeit synthetic “foods” that can be sold so cheap as to destroy honest competition. But that is exactly what is taking place.

Take the case of dextrose, the synthetic sugar made from starch. In Canada, I understand it cannot be used in any food, any more than water can be permitted in milk. It is there looked upon as a fraudulent filler, a cheat, that adds weight at less cost than that of the food it contaminates. Known to promote cancer,8 inhibit the assimilation of calcium,9 and to cause diabetes if fed to test animals,10 here in this country there is not the slightest interference with its criminal use by the authorities who are supposed to enforce our laws.

There is exactly the point I am trying to make clear. Our ability to distinguish right from wrong has been beclouded by the complexity of modern life. To show how far this remarkable drop in levels of honesty and justice has occurred, I call attention to a recent U. S. Supreme Court decision, by which facts may be thrown out of consideration by a Federal Court in a Food & Drug prosecution if they conflict with the opinion of the Government’s witnesses. I might add that the only prosecutions I know of in this respect are those in which a seller of food products sold in competition with refined and toxic substitutes was being railroaded for inferring that such a thing existed as general malnutrition, and that consequent misery and disease might be avoided if educational literature were universally available.

We even discover that the Vice-President and General Counsel of one of our largest bleached-flour producers is at the moment the executive head (under Mrs. Hobby) of the Federal Food & Drug Administration. That is like turning over the job of guarding Fort Knox to the biggest bank robber in the country.

These top-flight executives who are executing the American people do their dirty work in part by planting propaganda articles with official quotations from their hench-men in public office. In the January ’55 issue of Redbook magazine, you will find a typical weasel-worded article entitled “How Good are these Wonder Foods?” Here are two completely false and dishonest statements:

“The food quacks regularly belittle white bread with charges like these:

‘The millers grind 20 vitamins out of the flour and put back only four.'”

(That is a misstatement–they put back only four counterfeit, synthetic imitations, like a watch dealer who takes 20 jewels out of a watch and puts back four glass ones.)

“Quoting George P. Larrick, U.S.Commissioner of Foods and Drugs:

‘There is no scientific basis for the theory that crops grown either on poor soil, or with the help of chemical fertilizers are nutritionally inferior in any way.'”

Can you imagine such frightful misuse of official prestige?

As to the first statement on flour, I refer you to the careful and complete analysis of the flour-enrichment racket made by Dr. Samuel Lepkovsky, of the University of California, “The Bread Problem in War and Peace”, April, 1944, Physiological Reviews, available from Lee Foundation, Reprint No. 72, ten cents.

As to Larrick’s statement…it ranks along with his co-conspirator’s testimony under oath that “There is no scientific basis for believing that a person on a deficient diet is more susceptible to disease than one on a good diet.” (Dr. Elmer Nelson, head of the Food & Drug vitamin division, testifying in Federal Courts in the Nutrilite case.)

Can these men be insane, or simply dishonest? You are the judge. Unless we have such men at the top in our law enforcement personnel, we would not have been subjected in the last fifty years to a progressively degenerating state of food adulteration and sophistication, to the point where it is now practically impossible to buy wholesome foodstuffs in a public market.

How are we to recognize these impostures and crooked counterfeits?

  1. All cereals must be fresh milled immediately before use to insure nutritional integrity. (In the old days flour mills were as common and necessary as dairies. Cereal flours and meals are as perishable as milk.)
  2. The adulteration and filling with glucose (dextrose) is to be rigidly guarded against. From peanut butter to baby food today, you will find this criminal poison present to destroy your health. (Just because it is a slow poison makes it no more legitimate.) Canned fruits are loaded. It is obvious by its lack of sweetness.
  3. Hydrogenated fats are synthetic fats as ridiculous as food for man as dyed shavings with new-mown-hay flavor added would be for a horse. No trace of organic vitamins or minerals can survive the high temperatures used in concocting this fraud fat.
  4. Commercial Bread–Today, practically all bread is made in violation of the Federal law, but as bread bakers now divide the territories so as to avoid shipment over state lines, the Federal authorities cannot reach them.

What do they contain that is bad, besides stale, bleached flour unfit for food to start with? Just poisonous mold inhibitors, illegal (so says the F.D.A.) softeners that make the bread act like fresh-baked loaves in texture even after weeks; and imitation synthetic “vitamins” that kill test animals quicker than the same food without them. And do not forget the bleach chemicals are known to convert part of the natural vitamin content of the flour into alloxan, the most potent diabetes-producing poison known to science.

What, in general, puts all these foods in the category of misrepresented frauds? Simply that they all supply CALORIES, and nothing else. We all are fighting to protect our health by REDUCING our calorie intake. Because of such foods, the American people are filling up on fattening foods while they starve their cells of needed natural vitamins and organic minerals and contract CANCER, DIABETES, ARTHRITIS, HEART DISEASE and innumerable other relatively incurable forms of deficiency disease while our paid guardians of honest foodstuffs are working overtime to promote the wares of the food-counterfeiters. No law ever is enforced unless the public demands it. By keeping you and me in ignorance of the facts, we are being sold down the river just as surely and irrevocably as any black slave ever was. I, in fact, would rather be a black slave with my health than a “free” citizen of this racket-ridden country with stomach ulcers, cancer or arthritis.

Maybe you have not heard that cancer is a deficiency disease. In one test, out of 100 animals fed deficient food (such as WE eat) 90% developed cancer when injected with cancer tissue. Another 100 animals, fed NATURAL, UNREFINED foods, when injected similarly, in the same period of time were 100% IMMUNE.11

In all the misinformation and confusion about cancer, that experiment stands out like the Rock of Gibraltar. Millions are being spent to find a “wonder drug” to cure cancer–NOTHING to find out how to prevent it. WHY?

A most pitiful part of all this chicanery is the fact that these deficiency diseases tend to be hereditary. Diabetes, the dystrophies and paralytic degenerative states that follow vitamin E deficiency in particular, are found to become worse in each succeeding generation. So, also, is cancer.11,6

Are we to stand by, in mortal fear of the political power of these monstrous misanthropes while they destroy our nation? Not if I know the character of the Texas citizen–the last stand of American Independence!
