In Memoriam: Francis M. Pottenger, Jr., MD

With the death of Francis M. Pottenger, Jr., MD, on January 4, 1967, following a heart attack, LACMA has lost a valued member.
He was born in Monrovia, California, on May 29, 1901. He received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1929 and became a member of LACMA on March 7, 1932. Following internship at the Los Angeles County Hospital, he practiced with his eminent father in the treatment of tuberculosis. Later he did extensive research in nutrition and practiced in the fields of arthritis, deficiency diseases and non-tubercular chest conditions.
Doctor Pottenger was a member of numerous civic, scientific and professional organizations, including the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Nutrition, the American College of Physicians. He was also Assistant Clinical Professor of Experimental Medicine at the University of Southern California School of Medicine.
Throughout his longtime membership in LACMA, Doctor Pottenger served the Association in numerous important capacities and assignments. He was a Delegate from LACMA to the California Medical Association. He was Chairman of the Subcommittee on Air Pollution, LACMA Committee on Public Health, and Medical Service Chief, California Civil Defense, Region 9, Area D. His outstanding, distinguished and sustained service in these posts was recognized by the medical profession and the general community alike.
Doctor Pottenger is survived by his wife, Hilda, a son, two daughters, a sister and eleven grandchildren.
