Evidence of an Orderly Universe Controlled by Universal Law

In order that we may approach this subject of today in the spirit of the topic that I have selected, “Evidence of natural law in the universe controlling all the streams of knowledge that we have contact with,” I will ask you to think with me of the viewpoint that most of us have had and that the teachings of all the centuries of the past have brought to us, namely, that that which was understandable might be considered as natural. That which was not understandable was considered to be related to the Gods and to the forces of some other world than the one we are living in. They were not only considered unnatural, but celestial in a sense.

One of the greatest difficulties we have had in understanding the processes of the development of the universe has been that we have been wrapped up with the details of some branch of knowledge that we have been in contact with and we have been so close that we could not see the relation that existed between the different branches of knowledge.

We will look at a large series of evidence of phenomena that relate to different types of knowledge in order that we may see relationships that we do not see when we get close to the mass of detail.

As an approach to that I shall ask you to think with me of the first slide.

“A new truth is a new sense. For with that truth we can see things that we could not see without that new truth, and things that other persons without that new truth cannot see. New truth comes only to prepared minds.”

The membership of the churches of the past centuries have not had prepared minds. They have had minds that were so prejudiced that they could not see the truth that was about them. Perhaps the most outstanding characteristic as represented by the churches has been the characteristic of prejudice. So, if we are going to get near to God in His world we must find a way to overcome these prejudices.

In this slide we will see a statement by Dean H. R. Inge of St. Paul’s, London. It appeared in last week’s copy of the Literary Digest under the title “Evolution Only God’s Method.” I hope you will see it.

Some believe that the chief revelation which God has made to this generation has been through the natural sciences.

You will see here a lot of stumps of trees standing out through the sand and gravel of a great hillside. This picture might not have much meaning to a person who did not have an observing mind. However, a person would find that they are actually petrified trunks of trees. And what has happened?

A great glacier swept over part of our country and then there was a great period of thawing and then trees grew up. Then another great glacier came and swept over those trees and broke them down and the water soaked through the trees and then a great thaw came and melted away the ice.

If you will go through the western states, the southern part of Utah and Montana and also Yellowstone Park, you will find specimens. That is one of God’s ways of writing the record of his universe.

If you will go to many parts of our country, particularly to Canada, you will find that you can trace the coming and the going of the glaciers. By noting the thickness of the deposits that have formed each succeeding year it works out to about 12,000 years since the glaciers receded northward of Norway and Sweden. Ice covered the place and how easy it would be for a flood to go down through Mesopotamia and the water would rise in that great valley and we would have the physical condition that would of necessity create a flood.

If we think of this further, let us suppose that in the lower levels you will find a bank. You will find different kinds of bones here from what you would find in the higher levels of the stratum.

You will recognise at once that a different kind of animal lived at this time. Deposits were found in other places and the same kinds of animals existed again.

In the next slide we see a great bank and a large variety of different kinds of rock and we find skeletons of horses. As you go down from the top where the horses had one toe and then farther down where they have two toes and so on, and finally they were drawn together. These five digits which make your hand were drawn together similarly.

As we go along and trace through the horse’s general skeleton we find changes in the teeth.

Our great embarrassment will be if we try to wait on details. We will lose this great inter-relationship between the different sources of knowledge.

We have here the skeletons of these different horses with the modern horse’s characteristics represented and compared with the others.

In the next slide we find a series of heads of animals. We recognize the various forms as being related. They are just different in the lengths of the tusks. As the head grows larger the neck must get shorter. As the animal develops more brains it must have a larger head. This inter-relationship I will show you later where I have changed the shape of the bill of a chicken from the shape of that of a chicken to nearly that of the shape of a hawk or an eagle. This was done in just one generation by disturbing the vitamins. Its offsprings would not have that kind of a bill, but enough of that put on succeeding generations would do that.

And still another thing. If we change the vitamins of rats we can make their teeth turn outward instead of inward.

The next slide will show us an elephant that does not exist today. This animal was found in Siberia. Unfortunately the great mass of hair fell off when they found it. Here is the story.

Some men were prospecting in northern Russia and their dogs brought in some fresh meat. The men decided to investigate where the meat came from and the dogs led them to an elephant and to the end of the glacier. The elephant was buried in that glacier for tens of thousands of years and that meat was so good that the dogs ate it with a relish. This elephant was entirely unlike the elephants that are living on the earth today. It was like the elephants that I showed you in the glacier’s bed.

In the development of the forms of light if we can keep our minds open we will find that we have…[missing text]…that seem to be related to the size of the brain cavity. If you go down to the deposits of sand and gravel in the lower beds you will find heads of this kind and higher up you will find these forms and finally you will find the form that is that of the human being.

Note a law running through this. Law and order are controlling this and the things we know of are related to other things we know of.

We will find that the human jaw has developed just this way.

If you put particular pressure (incomplete sentence)

If you will put your thumb under your chin you will find a bone there. If you would take the earlier forms of man you would find no bone there, and that is the bone (incomplete sentence)

If you will feel again you will recognize how well developed your power of speech is. You will find a difference in people.

Some people are discouraged a great deal because some bone of their body is like some bone of an animal.

We have here the list of terms of existing facts of human ascent. And we find the human coming up through (incomplete sentence)…and you will notice that the monkey’s is a different bone but there is some resemblance. A lot of people are disturbed about the fact that they do not want it to be spoken of that humans are in any way anything like animals.

You probably read this week of a child born with a tail thirteen inches long.

This question of our having the same bones and muscles is not a thing to be disturbed about. That cat has the same bones as your body, has the same muscles as your body and the muscles have the same attachment and do the same work. I am simply saying there is law and order. If you will follow through you will see that there is no violence done. One must be in an attitude to see God’s truth.

We will recognise at once in this slide that we have a series of forms of life–the salamander, the tortoise, the rabbit and next the human. Now when I tell you that each one of you had an embryonic form like the first of the three in our interuteral life, don’t be amazed. Just recognise the facts that we have all come the same way and we have each one of us gone through all the stages of the simpler forms of life that preceded us. I am not saying some other human. I am talking about you. As soon as you feel yourself rebelling and you do not want to have it known that you came from a simpler form of life, just remember that each one of us started from a simple cell, and that cell divided into the two by the processes of fertilisation and you have been hearing that the rabbit has been in your development process and the chicken and the rabbit have been all that you have been, but you have been more than that.

We are all going through a progressive process. We are living in a world of law and order and when we once get the conception that under all this truth is law and unity (incomplete sentence)…from spending our life’s energy, when we have done that we will find God.

Take our next slide. You all know of the material substance of the universe. You call the matter…[missing text]… It may be wood, it may be steel or lead or any other structure. I want you to think now of a phase of law and order that dominates, that is marvelous beyond all conception for all of the different substances that we know as cement, and which enter into the…and make compound are all built of common building blocks which are always the same thing, namely, all elements are different, each from the other by having one or more additional units of the helium, and so if we take a (incomplete sentence)…scheme like this we find helium (incomplete sentence)…periodic chart of the atoms. They are all made of the substance, the protons and the electrons forming an atom and when an atom is formed near and formed of an energy factory then we have many streaks, one of which may be light. In these ninety-one items, each is like the other only having added to it one more building block. If you heat any one of those it will give off energy in the form of radiation that will always be characteristic of that thing you are heating. Iron will always show the band of iron, hydrogen always the band of hydrogen. This makes it possible for us to recognize any element whether it is nearby or whether it is in the sun or some distant star. Do you get it?

I don’t know of anything that inspires reverence like recognition that those stars out there in space are made of these same building blocks and I will show you how we know it.

If you have watched the sun at the time of the eclipse two or three years ago you saw at the time of the whole eclipse a halo of light around the great flaming masses of light, going out beyond the periphery of the sun. What was happening? Those great masses were (incomplete sentence)

They are called sun spots. This great…gasses out from the sun one hundred thousand miles, two hundred thousand miles, sometimes four hundred thousand miles. Now supposing some great wandering star passing across the heavens comes close enough to draw off some of this vapor, why then a mass of that material would be thrown off. If we would look at it we would find a spectrum of colors and we would find that that mass that was pulled off was precisely like the sun. This earth that we find ourselves on and (incomplete sentence)

Here we have a great many different substances. Now I am just going to introduce here the method by which these radiations are analysed. Radiant energy may start here and come (incomplete sentence)…When it arrives here it is not white like you see here but it is red, blue or violet.

The next slide. Here we have the spectrum of an eon. Whenever an eon is present you will find those lines…and helium is present. And when hydrogen is present you will find these lines. So that is the method and all of these bands have a different length and take a definite position on the photographic plate. There is nothing known to science that is more dependable and significant than those lines.

Here you find lines and we know that they are iron and here we have magnesium and calcium and those lines come from our sun. Here we have the method of making this observation. When a spectrographic record is made of the sun instead of finding bright spots where they should find them on the plate they find the opposite. They found light spots. It was found that all forms absorb energy that is given from substance and absorb the energy like that which it will give off.

I will never tell you anything as important as that, probably, in all the lectures I give.

…and make certain kinds of humans and make certain kinds of animals. But it was found that the sun is red hot in its interior and it is burning, let us say, calcium in its (incomplete sentence)…lights are going out and as they go out through the surface of the sun they are absorbed and that takes out the calcium.

Do you follow? The calcium line is in a certain position, the aluminum line, etc. There are ninety-two elements known to exist on the surface of our earth. Is it not amazing that eighty-two of those have actually been identified in our sun? Can it be a coincidence? No! Then when we look out into space and find that every star is hydrogen and helium and calcium and then find that even though the star is so far away, even though it is coming at the rate of…yet that star is made of the same material as our sun is made of and our earth is made of.

And here is the spectrum of a series of stars and you will see how certain stars would have certain bands and so we get a record of the bands of the stars. And so the same instrument tells how hot the body is.

The next slide. When you are sitting in a railroad train and you are passing another train the tone goes up and then it goes down. What has happened? The pitch rises with that tone because the other train is coming towards you and so your pitch is apparently higher. It is because you are going towards the other train and it is coming towards you.

If a star is coming towards that machine I showed you those lines will be in their proper order but instead of being in the…they will be shifted, and if a star is going away from you they will be shifted towards the red. That machine tells how fast any star is going from us or coming towards us. That machine tells just how fast that star is going.

The spectroscope throws a light on the length of time it takes bodies to move around other bodies. If you will look up into the Milky Way you will find it looks as though somebody has taken white wash and couched it on there. If you will realise that that bank of white is made up of innumerable suns that we call stars that are larger than our sun, some of them hundred of thousands times as large as our sun and at a distance so far away that when those great ice caps covered Sweden and all the territory of North America that light had not yet started, although coming one hundred ninety-six thousand miles a second. And again we find ourselves in the presence of a great body of universes with probably a million million suns as large as our sun and that distance is so remote that the light from some of them that comes into the telescope started over a million years ago. We find ourselves unable to orient ourselves. We cannot understand it but we do get this conception, that if all those suns are made of the same material as our sun, each one being in an order that unites it to our body, our sun and our earth, we find ourselves in the position that we are not quite so near the center of the universe. We are not quite important enough for the God of All to change His plans just because we want to do something. We are not quite so important.

We come to recognize that the most important thing that we can do is to take our proper place and be humble and willing to spend our lives putting ourselves in harmony to the laws that govern our universe. Look at the stars that are at such a distance that it staggers you and when we come to magnify those stars instead of being simple units they are a multitude of suns. And that great Milky Way…and goes all around our earth is only one of probably over a million such Milky Ways of which some individual star has its planets wandering around it as our sun has the planets wandering around. There is one of those at a distance. That is what our Milky Way would look like. Just a great band like a great wheel made up of such a large number of stars that they have to build larger telescopes in order that they may get the details of this group of stars.

In the next slide note that the energy that comes from the stars (incomplete sentence)…part of our body will absorb certain energies and only the energy that is absorbed can have any effect. Radiant energy is another expression of matter and this energy now comes to us. If we take a spectrum of quartz we have all those bands. And the visible spectrum stops here. That is all that you see.

Might I give you a scale on which to measure your radiant energy factors as known? If you will take the vibrations that are given off by this light, then take your radio waves, as another kind the heat waves, and the shorter waves, going on down to the X-ray and you make a scale as long as the earth to the moon and you go to mark off on the ruler the part that you see as long, how long a space on a ruler one hundred forty thousand miles long do you think it would take? Again we find ourselves a little more humble, for we thought we saw all the radiant energy there was and yet it would not be quite a yard on a ruler one hundred forty thousand miles in length. There is a lot that we have not known.

Here is one of the instruments that are built for determining the energy that comes from the skies in order that we may determine the effect it may have on lights. You just snap it like you would a camera and make a record of the radiant energy. The radiant energy that can get to the earth through the smoke screen is so little that bones cannot form properly and the teeth of those children cannot form properly. We not only huddle ourselves together, but we build a house to shut out the light and then put half of the entire population of the United States in groups as cities and yet we think we are civilized.

Christ said, “Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make ye free.” We talk as though we know a lot but we do not know much. We say that this is all nonsense and even a whole state voted that this thing I am telling you about cannot be taught. Even the Webster dictionaries must be taken out of the schools of Arkansas because they passed a law to that effect.

You would not expect crawling worms to have such ignorance, and yet here are humans. They say, “We will not let God’s law be revealed.”

If we make a picture with that machine the light should come like this. Here is an amusing thing. I do not know of anything that has ever thrilled me more than on finding after doing research for years of this energy factor that comes from the sun and changes our bodies than to find that with the same spectroscope we can find just how much of the energy factor there is in our own blood. If you will take many products, including some product of bacterial…and the products that are formed by animals and stored in the liver you will find that they contain chemicals that will absorb energy, so that for years we have been talking and speaking about cod liver oil.

How you remember that last week in the paper (incomplete sentence)…

They have now been able to identify what (incomplete sentence)…

He discovered that this material that was known as…was the same material that we have been activating in cod liver oil and did not know it was there. If you put some of that in a solution, here would be your band.

We put some of that…in a cell in front of a light like this and it absorbed all the light and even one of those lines is a delusion one half as strong as the one above it and the top one.

And the next slide is a picture made in the same way of human blood, and we can tell by that means how much of that material–that chemical–there is in our systems that would absorb the radiant energy if the radiant energy could get to our bodies.

We have thought of things that were not understandable. Those were related to something spiritual and something entirely aside from that body of truth that could be known and the churches of the past have said, “Keep away from that.” But this other body of truth, heat and light, you could study those things.

When Galileo made his first telescope and looked at the sun to see that it was really made of things that changed (incomplete sentence)…

His disciples were put to death and Galileo was made to recant by the church or be put to death if he did not. The fundamentalists today are satisfied to keep away from that.

There are three chickens the same age. The difference in those chickens is almost entirely radiant energy. The big one is five times as large as the little one. The reason why there are more (incomplete sentence)…

Here we have the same chicken in three views. The second one had two doses of a concentrated form and these two doses were millionth of a gram each and in two days the chicken could stand.

Mathew Arnold made this statement –

“But I will rather say that you remain
A world above man’s head, to let him see
How boundless might his soul’s horisons be,
How vast, yet of what clear transparency!”
