Basic Diet for Achieving Body Chemistry Balance

George E. Meinig, DDS / Unknown

Published in Price-Pottenger Nutrition Journal.

Dear Dr. Meinig:

You have at various times given diet suggestions for achieving good health, and listed various foods that are harmful. I don’t recall any one article that has summarized the do’s and don’ts. For reference purposes, it would be helpful to have this information outlined altogether. – G.A.

Dear G. A.:

You are correct. I haven’t outlined the positives and negatives of good nutrition in this manner. Isn’t it strange how the obvious so often eludes us?

Basic Diet For Achieving Body Chemistry Balance

  1. Fresh fish, poultry, meat. Include organ meats, liver, brains, sweet breads, etc.
  2. Eggs: raw, soft boiled, poached.
  3. Vegetables: Include a large variety…preferably raw, not canned. Steaming is the lowest-heat method of cooking. Have two raw salads daily. (Olive oil and vinegar dressing)
  4. Nuts: Use only fresh raw nuts…not roasted, salted or prepared. No cashews or peanuts. Keep nuts refrigerated. (Rancidity upsets body chemistry).
  5. Butter and cream (not “half and half “), raw if preferred. (Not pasteurized or homogenized).
  6. Old fashioned Olive oil.
  7. Seeds of all kinds such as pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, etc.
  8. 100 percent whole grain cereals and flours; breads that contain NO preservatives.
  9. Fresh fruit. Limit: One to three pieces per day. NO JUICES.
  10. Use vegetable or sea salt–sparingly.
  11. Distilled water–not “ionized”. Arrowhead is the only local water company that provides distilled water. Most city waters contain harmful chemicals and other ingredients.

When an individual’s diet is composed of above foods and beverages he has achieved a positive approach to nutrition. This diet will supply the 40 to 50 essential vitamins and minerals, proteins and enzymes that are necessary for building healthy tissues.

The diets of most people contain many foods that upset body chemistry. These do much to prevent the attainment of good health.

The following are “No-No’s”–the foods and beverages that cause many degenerative diseases, and are the origin of most or the common health problems that plague our civilization, including heart disease, cancer, arthritis, tooth decay, gum trouble, etc. Overcoming these conditions with an initial detoxification program necessitates the complete elimination of the following:

ALL sugar or artificial sweeteners and all foods that contain them. This includes white and brown sugar, corn syrup, dextrose, honey, turbinado, candies, pastry, cakes, cookies, ice cream, most canned foods and desserts.

ALL coffee, tea, colas or soft drinks, alcohol and tobacco.

ALL dairy products: Milk, cheese, yogurt (except butter and whole cream).

ALL fruit juices, including tomato juice. Eating fruit may also have to be eliminated to correct some problems such as sensitive teeth allergies, skin trouble, arthritis, etc.

ALL saturated or refined vegetable fat, including margarine and deep fat-fried foods.

All white flour products, crackers, also most rye products, as the rye is usually combined with white flour and/or preservatives.

Read labels and you will gradually become aware of the large number of common foods that contain sweeteners, preservatives and various chemicals. One must use natural, fresh foods if the body chemistry is to be restored to normal. The body heals and restores itself when given the essential nutrients.

After health problems are controlled, limited amounts of the following may be used:

  1. Fruit: One piece twice a day (Whole and fresh only–not canned). Wash all fruit carefully.
  2. Dairy products: Buttermilk, yogurt, old fashioned unprocessed cheese.

Should any previous health problems return when any of these foods are again used, eliminate the ones responsible.

Many feel that elimination of these foods and beverages leaves them with nothing to eat. If you also think this way, please try to become aware that your diet is leading you in the direction of Big Trouble.

If you will refer again to the first list, you will find that it contains an abundance of delicious foods that would please any palate. However, since our bodies always cling to the familiar, and resist change, it will not be easy at first. But as you begin to find the simpler foods more palatable, the “chemical feast” of additives, preservatives and stimulants will lose its charm, and be replaced by a delightful and increasing feeling of well-being.

Your perseverance will be richly rewarded!
