Are You a Wise Old Owl?

Dear Dr. Meinig: I’m so dished out at the end of the day I don’t know whether I’m coming or going and my husband isn’t much better. We have a good dinner but that doesn’t seem to pick us up very much. Sure we lead busy, active lives but I don’t think we should be so awful tired all the time.
You mentioned one time that we should have Vim, Vigor and Vitality. I think we should too, but how do we get it? – A. L.
Dear A. L.: You mentioned having a good dinner but didn’t say anything about what happens all the rest of the day. Most people consume lots of sweet and starchy foods all washed down with coffee, tea or soft drinks. We need lots of protein, such as fish, poultry, meat and eggs, along with plenty of fresh raw vegetables. Not too many even have one raw salad a day. Two routinely would surely help supply vitamins and minerals.
Dr. Jerry Mittleman and his wife Beverly put out a bimonthly newsletter for his New York City patients that is usually filled with many of the same things that I write in these columns. I’m going to be lazy again this week and use his July-August 1981 letter to answer your question.
From the “ONCE DAILY” by Jerry & Beverly Mittleman:
How Do You Feel at the End of the Day?
If you need coffee during the day, or cocktails at the end of the day, it could be that you need a better breakfast at the beginning of the day.
Government studies show that people who have poor breakfasts, high in starch and sugar, and low in protein, suffer from lowered efficiency and fatigue in the afternoon…no matter what they have for lunch.
A protein breakfast also helps build will power to resist the urge for sweets during the day, sweets that are bad for your teeth and gums (and your figure).
At a recent dental nutrition workshop, a periodontist reported a close relationship between poor breakfasts and the severity of gum disease.
Instead of having only toast, coffee, cereal, or danish pastry for breakfast, try adding meat, cheese, peanut butter, fish, or eggs–for a better day and a healthier mouth.
