Most Avocado Oils Fail Purity & Quality Test
Echoing common concerns about the purity and quality of olive oil, researchers at UC Davis found avocado oils equally suspect, with only 31% of sampled products testing as pure and 36% retaining their fresh quality. The researchers hope their findings will contribute to standards that benefit consumers while promoting fair competition among avocado oil producers. Read more at SciTechDaily.
Auctioned Goat Triggers Debate on 4-H Policies
Deputies in Shasta County, CA, responded to the abduction of a goat named Cedar whose 9-year-old owner, a participant in 4-H’s popular Junior Livestock program, changed her mind about relinquishing the animal for slaughter at the program’s completion. The program, which is completely voluntary, is meant to help train kids in the realities of raising livestock for food, but some think the rules are due for reevaluation. Read more at Modern Farmer.

A proposed explanation is that processed foods tend to replace beneficial water with sugar, oils, and sodium. Unprocessed and minimally processed foods reduced these fluctuations, underscoring the importance of diet choices in cardiovascular health. Read more at News Medical.

Emphasizing the importance of unpaid labor, primarily done by women, Gottlieb proposes a transition from the current destructive food system to one fostering health, fair treatment of workers, and environmental sustainability.
