THIS WEEK’S NEWS
Men Get Hungrier with Sun Exposure
Israeli researchers have identified differences between male and female metabolic response to sun exposure: it increases men’s appetites, but not women’s, due to estrogen’s ability to block certain protein and hormone interactions. This observation reminds us that, when determining our optimal diet and lifestyle plan, it is worth considering many different biological and other factors that contribute to each person’s individuality and unique needs. Mammoth Bones Tell Savory Tales
37,000-year-old mammoth bones found in New Mexico and studied at University of Texas’s Jackson School of Geosciences show evidence of human hunting, butchering, arranging, and even guarding activities. This discovery helps flesh out the story of humans’ global expansion, including the food sources we relied on and the activities and technology used to acquire and process them. Breastfeeding Reduces Leaky Gut in Infants
According to the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Institute for Genome Sciences, babies who are breastfed show more strains of beneficial gut bacteria and develop stronger intestinal walls (the opposite of “leaky gut”) than those receiving formula. These advantages help them absorb nutrients better, which may explain some of the benefits of breastfeeding, while also providing insights to improve formula nutrition. Read more at Medical Xpress.
Ghee’s Golden Reputation Shines
Ghee (butter clarified by simmering and straining out the milk solids), is made of up to 50-70% saturated fat. Resistant to heat and rancidity, its ancient, golden reputation was tarnished by the modern perception of saturated fats being unhealthy. As this fog begins to lift, authors and food historians share how this pure ingredient is integral to Indian cultural roots and delicious traditions. Read more at BBC World Table.
