Recent research shows that spending time in nature has health benefits for preschool children. Using a questionnaire administered to parents living in an urban area (Hong Kong), the researchers determined that children with a close connection to nature had less hyperactivity, fewer emotional difficulties, less stress, and better social behavior than their peers. Sixteen percent of preschoolers in Hong Kong and up to 22 percent in China show signs of mental health problems, and “child-nature disconnectedness” in the cities has been criticized as a contributing factor.
