A study of paper food-packaging materials used in fast food restaurants throughout the US found evidence of fluorinated compounds that can leach into food and accumulate in our bodies. The researchers tested more than 400 samples of packaging materials, including food contact papers and paperboard containers, from 27 fast food restaurant chains. Fifty-six percent of dessert and bread wrappers, 38 percent of sandwich and burger wrappers, and 20 percent of paperboard packaging (such as boxes for fries and pizza) were found to contain detectable levels of fluorine through the use of spectroscopy...
