From The New York Times Independent studies, including reports published by the National Academy of Sciences, suggest that every year millions of Americans become sick from drinking contaminated water that meets the regulations spelled out in the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974. The Act originally contained regulations for 20 different contaminants but, by the year 2000, that number had reached 91.
