Implementing one of the world’s most stringent bag bans, Kenya will now punish anyone manufacturing or importing plastic shopping bags with a fine of $19,000 to $38,000 or jail time. Garbage bags will be removed from supermarket shelves, and travelers flying to Kenya will have to leave their plastic carrier bags at the airport. The United Nations estimates that shoppers in Kenya use 100 million plastic bags a year, contributing to a massive worldwide problem of plastic waste, much of which ends up in the oceans, where it is a danger to sea life.
