The use of zinc acetate lozenges may increase the rate of recovery from the common cold threefold, according to a meta-analysis of three randomized, controlled trials that was published in the journal Open Forum Infectious Diseases. Members of the experimental groups in the three studies took a daily dose of zinc ranging from 80 to 92 mg. By the fifth day, 70 percent of them had recovered, compared with only 27 percent of those in the placebo groups.
