Nearly one-third of the new drugs approved by the FDA over a ten-year period were found to have unexpected side effects - some life threatening - long after they entered the marketplace. An analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in May 2017 examined all 222 prescription drugs approved between 2001 and 2010, and found that safety concerns had been discovered for 71 of these during post-market monitoring.
