From Food Safety News & Information [“In The News”] The use of chlorine, the primary disinfectant in U.S. poultry processing, has become a problem for poultry exports to Russia. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has joined the European Union in refusing to import chickens from countries using the chemical beginning January 1, 2010, for food safety reasons. Russia plans to restrict imports totaling 780,000 metric tons of poultry in 2010 and limit America’s quota to 600,000 metric tons.
