A 2018 Cochrane Review concludes there is high-quality evidence that omega-3 supplementation during pregnancy is an effective strategy to prevent preterm births. This reverses a previous finding by Cochrane in 2006, which indicated there was insufficient evidence to support the routine use of omega-3 supplements during pregnancy. In the new review, which analyzed 70 randomized trials, the researchers found that, for pregnant women, increasing the daily intake of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) lowers the risk of having a premature baby (less than 37 weeks) by 11 percent and...
