Preliminary research in the Journal of the American Heart Association suggests that tai chi holds promise as an alternative exercise option for cardiac patients who decline traditional rehabilitation after a heart attack. Over 60 percent of heart attack patients choose not to participate in traditional cardiac rehabilitation, for a variety of reasons ranging from financial concerns to the perception of physical exercise as painful or unpleasant.
