Aerobically fit children have more compact and fibrous brain white matter than less-fit children, a new study from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne has found. White matter is composed  mainly of nerve fiber tracts that transmit signals from one area of the brain to another. Tracts that are more compact and fibrous are linked with faster, more efficient nerve activity. Using a type of MRI called diffusor tension imaging, researchers studied the brain microstructure of 24 children, ages nine and ten, with varying aerobicfitness levels.
