There are many reasons why soil is a basic consideration. Organic matter is paramount. In sandy soil; it ties together large quartz particles into crumbly aggregates, linked by the polysaccharides generated in decomposition of organic components. In tight clays, it breaks up clods by providing lines of weakness. It increases the amount of enzymes, freely existing ("accumulated") in soil. Such enzymes depend on the type of organic matter and the depth to which it is incorporated, as well as the preceding plant cover.
