The Healing Process Re-Examined
There is a lot of emphasis on stress management these days, which simply refers to maximizing our ability to adapt to life, to our environment, to the situations that confront us. In fact, we may define health and illness in terms of adaptability. A well person is able to adapt to life. He recovers quickly from the "flu" if indeed he gets sick at all. He adapts easily to extremes of climate. He is riot affected by chemical pollutants, and he experiences life as a joyful, challenging adventure. A sick person has lost this capacity. (The theory of survival of the fittest might be renamed survival of those who are adaptable.)
