The Changing Face of “Organic”
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) coughed up its final rule for the National Organic Program on December 21, 2000. From the beginning, there has been a difference of opinion in the organic community as to whether the word 'consistent,' as used in the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) of 1990, means what the USDA says it means: one uniform standard that is simultaneously a maximum standard and a minimum standard. Minimum is okay with us, maximum is not. This uniform standard, I fear, will put organic agriculture on the same path of mass production, "efficiency," and low cost food that has almost destroyed ordinary farming.
