Raw Milk Institute Update
The Raw Milk Institute (RAWMI) is a US-based nonprofit organization founded in 2010 to develop and set food safety standards for raw milk production both domestically and internationally. RAWMI published the first raw dairy Common Standards in 2011 after months of consulting with state regulators, scientific experts, dairy farmers, and veterinarians. Before that, there were no recognized national or international standards for raw milk production or safety.
Over the course of the last seven years, RAWMI has listed 16 dairies, 12 in the US and 4 in Canada. These pioneering dairies range in size from 3 cows to more than 600 but have one thing in common: a deep dedication to clean, safe raw milk. Three of the dairies sell their products in retail stores, and the rest sell farm direct to consumers. An additional 4 dairies in the Netherlands and elsewhere in the EU are in the process of becoming RAWMI listed.
