In The News, Summer 2018: Children’s Oral Microbiota May Help Predict Obesity

The oral bacteria of two-year-olds are related to their weight gain trajectories in early childhood, according to a recent study published in Scientific Reports. Among 226 children participating in the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center’s INSIGHT trial, those who experienced rapid infant weight gain - known to be a strong risk factor for childhood obesity - had less bacterial diversity and a higher Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes (F:B) ratio in their oral microbiota.
