In The News, Summer 2016: Newborns Not Breastfed in the First Hour of Life Face Health Risks

More than half of newborns - approximately 77 million worldwide - are not breastfed within an hour of birth, increasing their risk of infection and raising the rates of infant mortality, according to a recent statement from UNICEF, the United Nations’ agency on children. The agency explained that delaying or refraining from breastfeeding deprives babies of the “essential nutrients, antibodies, and skin-to-skin contact with their mothers that protect them from death and disease.”
