In The News, Summer 2016: Children’s Antibiotic Treatments Alter Gut Microbiota

Multiple antibiotic treatments in children below the age of three resulted in less stability and diversity of the intestinal microbiota, a small study out of Finland found. This effect was particularly noticeable at the level of microbial strains, with antibiotic-treated children having many more single-strain species than those who had not been treated, who tended to have multiple strains for each species.
