High Sugar Consumption Poses Health Risks
Some 15% of Americans are prone genetically to elevated fat levels (triglycerides) circulating in their blood. Reiser and his colleagues showed that sugar raises triglycerides even higher in these people. Later, the researchers found that people with high triglycerides generally have elevated insulin levels, too. These are key risk factors, respectively, for heart disease and diabetes. As early as the 1960s, research showed fructose to be lipogenic (fat formative) in all people. The liver removes all of the absorbed sugar from the blood and converts it into triglycerides, which then are secreted back into the blood.
