Genetics and Orthomolecular Psychiatry
By 1955 psychiatry had become derailed from modern medicine, entering a dark phase in the history of psychiatry. Psychoanalysis had at last captured psychiatry by taking over the leading university departments of psychiatry, by displacing biological psychiatrists from top positions in professional organizations and in their journals, and even in the nascent National Institute of Mental Health in Washington.
Psychiatric ideology swung sharply from a biological to a psychosocial orientation. The attack on biology included an assault on genetic research in an attempt to show it had no basis. Genetics and psychoanalysis are totally incompatible.
