From the Executive Director – Spring 2022
Dear Members and Friends,
If you’re like me, you can sense the energy in our midst, propelling us into a period of invaluable and positive transformation, despite our current challenges. Declining health, climate change, social injustice, and the impacts of a senseless war are testing the fabric of our societies. We desperately need a return to connection with one another, with community, and with our planet. Fortunately, this energy has the potential to empower us with hope, inform us with trustworthy information, and enlighten us to act responsibly.
After two years of the pandemic, it remains difficult to envision a complete return to pre-Covid safety or personal health freedoms. But thankfully the restrictions that have upended our lives, along with the tragedies that so many experienced, are ending. Hawaii, the last state with an indoor mask mandate, has announced an end to this requirement on March 25. While this milestone is worthy of a celebration, health leaders and the media are prepping us for a transition rather than a conclusion. The language is changing – pandemic is evolving to endemic – and the impacts will likely be with us for months and years to come.
In the meantime, long-needed attention to climate change is propelling us to consider our individual choices. And with Earth Day around the corner, we hope that you will join us in acting on behalf of our planet! As we reported last year, unhealthy meat substitutes are proliferating in supermarkets and quick-service restaurants. Moreover, “plant-based” product messaging is swaying the public to believe that meat and dairy alternatives are good for people and the planet. While it’s true that industrial beef’s carbon footprint is unsustainable, many people don’t realize that if we moved from the prevailing concentrated animal farming systems to regenerative grazing methods, methane emissions would be almost entirely sequestered and farms could even become carbon neutral. On Earth Day 2022 (and throughout the year), we encourage you to support those farmers whose agricultural and animal husbandry practices are humane and in harmony with nature, like the ones Dr. Price observed in the indigenous communities he studied 100 years ago.
This issue of our journal is packed with information to holistically advance your health. Home and market gardener Leah Smith provides us with techniques to get the most nutritive value from our produce; chiropractor Kristen Mitteness offers tips for taking care of our spines to promote mental and physical wellness; and James Nestor, author of the acclaimed bestseller Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, shares his years’ long journey and research to uncover vital truths about this essential function. There’s material in this journal to unlock your best health in many ways!
Whatever we face in the weeks and months to come, you can rely on Price-Pottenger for informed natural and holistic health information to empower your well-being and the health of people everywhere. But we can’t do this alone. Please consider joining our community of donors by making a generous contribution to support our mission to change lives through health and nutrition. Thank you!
Wishing you health and joy,
Steven Schindler
