Deja Vu… All Over Again
A heated debate occurred at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association in November 2002 about which type of diet is best for weight control: low carbohydrate/high protein; or high carbohydrate/low protein. The former is epitomized by the Atkins diet; the latter, by the AHA Step 1 diet, as well as official recommendations by the federal government. The current furore is deja vu. In 1946, the book Meat Three Times a Day by Frederick Schlink and his wife Mary Catherine Phillips was published. Perhaps what is most striking about the book, for readers in 2003, is the foresight that Schlink and Phillips displayed regarding the current controversy.
