Emerging from the medical profession is a new direction, for helping "untreatable" patients. The approach, conceptualized by California psychiatrist Dr. Melvyn Werbach, is tailored for patients who have not been helped by traditional medicine.
This so-called "Third Line Medicine" is a medically-based holistic approach, including use of safe - if sometimes controversial-treatments.
Werbach explains it this way: "Current medical practice provides two lines of care. First Line Medicine is the basic care provided by primary physicians. Second Line Medicine is sophisticated, specialized treatment. When these fail, the chronically ill have been left with two options: to live with their symptoms or to explore alternative medicine.
