What is the different between wild and commercial produce?
Question
Can you make the blueberry research paper you talked about available for download or let us know how we can access it? I have purchased the Vital Choice blueberries and the Cascadian Farm blueberries and see and taste a difference. I would like to know more about the nutritional difference and what test methods are used to identify and quantify them.
Similarly, you mentioned, I believe, that once an orange has been picked it immediately loses about half the nutrients in a very short time. Add to that the shipping times, the fact that the fruit has been picked unripe, and the fact that even the organic fruit is harvested in less than optimal conditions in most cases…it would be interesting to see the difference from a well nourished orange tree right after picking (from my backyard) and an organic orange I get from the global distributors. I would like to apply the same measurement techniques used in the blueberry study if possible at my local university to run some tests. It seems that we would be overlaying a power curve or exponential curve for decay rate from date of picked to eating with a statistical “curve” of nutrient loss in growing methods, with a degradation of nutrients between peeling/cutting and eating time, and possibly several other losses.
Answer
All published research articles are copyrighted and I sign an agreement when I purchase them from the journal’s publisher. The blueberry research paper was purchased before my house was destroyed in the wildfires and so I will need to find time to relocate the reference in order to give you the citation. I will refer back to it on this Q&A.
That would be a good study and you should be able to easily ascertain from the available literature what the most accurate test would be for you to use for vitamin C. As I said, I will try to locate the article on blueberries. When I initially researched the articles on the nutrient and antioxidant content of wild versus commercial blueberries I only found the article I use for my lectures. I have since found quite a few articles on the topic and will also refer to these articles.
